George Balanchine is widely considered the greatest ballet choreographer of the twentieth century. Born in Russia, he left for Europe in 1924 and arrived in the United States in 1933. With Lincoln Kirstein, he formed the New York City Ballet in 1948. Balanchine spent years building the company and creating an extraordinary dance repertoire. Balanchine pictures the choreographer's work in performances at the New York City Ballet.
