Great Northern 2012
Great Northern Rails Calendar
Created in September 1889 from existing Minnesota railroads, the Great Northern Railway eventually stretched west through North Dakota, Montana, and Northern Idaho to Washington State. James Jerome Hill, the "Empire Builder," constructed this line. It was one of four roads merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad on March 2, 1970. The Great Northern Railway 2012 calendar shows the reach and power of the important transportation link with color photographs taken in the 1950s and the 1960s.
Great Northern Rails Background
The Great Northern Railway opened the northern Midwestern States, the Pacific Northwest and parts of Canada to prosperity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. When it merged with three other railways to become the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970, Great Northern became an even greater force in the economic life of the West in two countries.
Great Northern Rails Introduction
The tracks, the trains and the history live on in the just-released Great Northern 2012 calendar published by Tide-mark Press. Built across the plains, mountains and valleys stretching from the Midwest to the Pacific, Great Northern carried to market the products of farms, mines, and industries in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia. It also linked the people of the large cities and small towns growing to prosperity.
