ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ARTIST

Jonathan Green portrays the way of life as he remembers it while growing up in Gardens Corners, near Beufort, South Carolina: the way people fished, farmed, harvested, but also how they worshipped, danced and celebrated. He has been credited with almost single-handedly bringing the Gullah culture to the forefront and visually preserving its unique culture.

As a nationally recognized artist of southern culture and heritage, Jonathan Green celebrates the work, daily life, community and dignity of people of the rural south. Often placed in context with other important artists of the African-American experience such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett and John Biggers, Green has carefully crafted his own unique and inclusive style and perspective, combining influences from his years studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with his Gullah heritage.

Green was born in 1955 in Gardens Corner, South Carolina and graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1982. Following his graduation Green traveled widely – throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the West Indies, Switzerland, Germany, England and France. In his art Green draws upon his own intimate personal experiences, steeped in the traditions of family, community and life in the Low Country of South Carolina. Each of his paintings is a testament to the motivating power of place and the enduring qualities of culture.
