Samuel Bellamy – AKA Black Bellamy, was a formidable pirate in the early eighteenth century. The wreckage of his ship was discovered off Cape Cod in 1984. It is believe to have been sunk during a terrible storm in 1717.
Maurycy Beniowski – AKA Baron Maurice de Benyowski – was born in Poland to an aristocratic family. On an African Island near Madagascar, he established a stronghold, and proclaimed himself king.
Anne Bonny, born in Ireland in the late 1690s, the product of a liaison between a servant woman and her employer, a lawyer, whose wife soon discovered the affair. Fleeing the scandal and Ireland the lovers became landowners in Charleston, SC. At the age of 16 Anne married local pirate James Bonny. Soon after, she left her husband and, disguising herself as a man, joined Calico Jack” Rackham’s crew, and became his lover. Her husband’s ship was later captured and her life was spared.
Edward Teach, best known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate who spread terror in the Caribbean Sea between 1716 and 1718, often cited as the Golden Age of Piracy. He was killed in battle, reportedly shot 5 times and stabbed more than 20 times before dying. In 1996 ,what is believed to have been his ship was discovered near Beaufort, NC. |
