![]() Sockalexis FundHowever… If your library, your school, your organization has funds for speakers, a speaking stipend or expense money, I would very much appreciate seeing that sum sent along, on my behalf, to a fund I have created on Louis's home reservation, the Penobscot reservation on Indian Island (just across from Old Town, Maine on the Penobscot River). The Sockalexis Fund has, as its sole important goal, the following: Refurbish the gravestone of Andrew Sockalexis, Louis's famous second cousin, who is buried just a handful of feet from Louis's very impressive gravestone. Andrew took 2nd place at the Boston Marathon in both 1912 and 1913, and he was the American favorite to win and 4th place finisher in the marathon at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. Contributions should be made out to the "Sockalexis Fund" and sent to: Sockalexis Fund c/o Carla Fearon, Director Penobscot Nation Boys and Girls Club 12 Wabanaki Way Indian Island, Maine 04468 The author humbly and gratefully thanks the following who have generously contributed to the fund to date: Friends of the Norway Public Library, Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, Naples Public Library, Indian Township School, Old Town Public Library, McArthur Public Library in Biddeford, and Bonny Eagle Middle School in Buxton. |
